Riga: Kniga dlia vsekh, 1929. 164 pp. 19x14 cm. Contemporary owner's binding. Complete with a Bulgakov's portrait on the frontispiece. The famous pirated edition. The story of publication of White Guard is quite tragic as Bulgakov was denied by several magazines and publishing houses, before finally chapters of the novel started to appear in periodical 'Rossiya'. However in 1925 the magazine ceased to exist so Bulgakov was forced to find another place to publish. Eventually the place was found in Paris in the publishing house 'Concorde'. However before that this edition appeared in Riga, printed without authors consent and any preface, with the text of the ending of the novel that was not included in 'Rossiya' publications. However the text was not received from Bulgakov and was dramatically different from authors version. Bulgakov was quite angry to learn about the existence of this publications and wrote that he's not aware of who finished the novel for him. Very rare. Stamps of…
