First edition of this analysis of the character, cultivation, and uses of various soils, drawing on Evelyn's practical experience as a keen gardener, in notably nice condition.
Although best known as a diarist, John Evelyn (1620-1706) was also a founding fellow of the Royal Society and a lifelong participant in the new natural philosophy. The Philosophical Discourse of Earth, bringing together many of his major interests, was commissioned by the Society, and was first presented at a lecture on 29 April 1675. Evelyn gained much practical experience of horticulture at his home in Wotton: the reputation of his garden stimulated correspondence with fellow horticulturalists both humble and aristocratic.
