First edition, first impression, inscribed by the author in the year of publication on the half-title, "To Donn, Love, Roald Dahl, 1988". Matilda won the Children's Book Award in 1989. It formed the basis for both the 1996 film directed by Danny DeVito and the successful stage musical which premiered at the RSC's Courtyard Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon in November 2010.
