Description

NY: Harcourt Brace, 1933. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very Good -. First edition, inscribed by Gertrude Stein and signed, too, by Alice B. Toklas. Copies signed by the pair are highly uncommon. Stein has inscribed the book on the free front endpaper to Dr. (indecipherable), then below her signature is Toklas's in shaky hand. Lacking the dustjacket (though a facsimile is supplied). In publisher's bluish gray cloth, stamped in silver with a shallow loss at the crown of spine with two short tears, and a small abrasion to the cloth on the top edge near the middle of the front cover. Paper over front hinge has evidence of repair, and the free front endpaper is split along hinge for its bottom half. There is a bookplate, without a name, in the Art-Deco style on the front pastedown.
