Octavo. 392 pp. Engraved portrait frontispiece by Scoles, eye draught of Madison's Cave, map of the Ohio River. Bound in 20th-century blue-gray cloth with red leather spine label. Pencil erasure marks to verso of frontispiece and title page; paper age-toned. One of several editions of Jefferson's Notes published in the year of his inauguration, a momentous event for the young republic, marking the first transfer of power from one political party to another. Overall a Very Good copy of the only book-length work published by Jefferson in his lifetime. [Howes J78; Sabin 35902; Cunningham pp. 16-17].
