A sumptuous 5 volume set in beautiful tree calf leather with triple gilt ruled border with decorative corner design. SIGNED by John Ruskin in Volume 1 at the conclusion of the Preface. The final paragraph of the Preface to the New Edition reads as follows: "I sign with my own hand this preface to every copy, thus certifying it as containing the best impressions of the original plates now produceable; and belong to the last edition of the book in its complete form." All volumes rebacked with double leather labels and five raised bands, dated 1873 at the foot of the spine. All edges stained red, as issued. Marbled endpapers. The endpapers on the verso of the boards are double ruled in gilt, with additional decorative border designs. All volumes are in uniformly in Fine unmarked condition, internally. Externally, light wear to the corners and evidence of light wear to the boards, else a very attractive set by the great Ruskin. LAID IN, a postcard postage stamped in Feb 1968 to French painter Andr� Bic�t (a previous owner). Born in Essex to French and Anglo-Irish parents, Bic�t was a painter, printmaker and influential teacher. Has South Kensington postmark and mailed to Bic�t at Crays Pond House, Berkshire.
