Previous owner, Henry William Rankin (1851 - 1937) of E. Northfield, MA, was librarian at the Northfield Mount Hermon School and a theologian, philosopher, and author. Rankin was a noted correspondent of William James. On late blank pages Rankin pasted in and made hand-written notes regarding Stevenson's life, his literary inspirations as well as R.L.S.'s epitaph.
