The signed inscription reads: To my dear friend, Fred. His dear friend is Fred Naugle, a climical psychologist who earned a PH.D from Syracuse University. Dr. Naugle died in an automobile accident in 2005. The novel tells the story of apartheid in South Africa where a black man's country is ruled by a white minority who imposed their own law on the native people. The book was a world-wide best seller and is acknowledged to be one of the great novels of the 20th century. Dr. Naugle's name is printed on the first page facing the inner front cover.
