Description

Paris, Shakespeare and Company, 1927. Duodecimo (122 95 mm), [24] pages (including the initial blank page and the terminal blank leaf) plus an errata slip tipped in on the blank page facing the colophon. Pale green papered boards lettered in dark green; spine lightly rubbed at the ends; covers a little sunned about the spine, with a couple of small marks at the rear; an excellent copy (internally fine) of a fragile production. This short collection of poems was sold for 12 pennies or 12 francs and contains 13 poems, hence 'Pomes Penyeach' (the thirteenth poem being the 'tilly', the Irish term for the thirteenth item in a 'baker's dozen' and also the title of the first poem). Slocum and Cahoon 24 (giving a publication date of 5 July 1927). A deluxe issue of thirteen copies on handmade paper was also produced.

About Pomes Penyeach

Pomes Penyeach is a collection of thirteen short poems by James Joyce. It was originally published on July 7, 1927 by Shakespeare and Company for the price of one shilling (twelve pence) or twelve francs. The poems were written over a twenty-year period from 1904 to 1924, and two of the pieces ('Tilly' and 'A Prayer') had already appeared in James Joyce's earlier published work, 'Chamber Music'.
