First American edition, originally appearing in the periodical Good Works for the Young (11/70-6/71). iv, 315 pp. Illustrated. Hardcover, bound in cloth over marbled boards, recased preserving the original cloth. Light foxing to the preliminary and last few leaves; gift inscription dated Christmas 1871; toning and the occasional blemish; marginal tear 259-260. Usually found in pictorial cloth, this period binding may be a variant from the publisher, but, since it lacks the publisher's name on the spine, is more likely custom.
