~Original black cloth, gilt lettering to spine. Mild rubbing to boards, spine slightly cocked. A few very faint small splash marks to front board; one similar to spine. Minor wear to board corners, with rubbing to top corner of front board and a little white marking to adjacent board fore-edge. 8vo. Browning and mild foxing to page edges. Hinges sound, endpapers uncracked at gutters. Owner's signature dated 1935 to front free endpaper. Endpapers and endpages virtually unfoxed; a few occasional spots of foxing only to text block. First British edition: Burmese Days, Orwell's first novel, was first published in New York in 1934: Victor Gollancz in London had initially rejected the novel ('obviously written directly from experience', ODNB) for fear of libel actions, and published it only after the success of the American edition. ~Robust packaging.
