Hardcover. Bound in full leather. Two volumes bound together as one. 19th century leather boards and leather spine added by conservator more recently. Dark maroon and black title labels, raised cords on the spine. Marbled endpapers. Binding nice and tight, spine supple, overall clean and attractive. It's not clear whether these 2 volumes were bound together as 1 around the original publication time in 1869, or if rebound together as 1 more recently, when new spine was added. Blank side of front endpaper (marbled) slightly foxed, with Thomas Lovejoy's name dated 1966 and bookseller's pencil notes that this is a first edition. Title pages both both volumes dated 1869. Volume 1 has 478 pages, with illustrations and maps. Volume 2 has 524 pages with folding map present after the title page. All maps and plates present and in correct positions. Dedicated to Charles Darwin. This volume comes from the collection of Dr. Thomas Lovejoy, who was a passionate book collector as well as a renowned biologist.
