Description

Large 8vo. 1937. 4 vols 'uniform' edition (complete). the public edition of this setting. Very good in frayed and slightly grubby, spotted d/ws. Each vol signed on title-page ' E. A. StJ. Waugh'. All with bookplate of Desmond Ivo Vesey, playwright and translator (inter alia) of Brecht and Joseph Roth. The signature found here is very idiosyncratic in as far as it conforms to none of the many other versions illustrated on the website dedicated to E.W's autographs. 'Evelyn had arranged - at his own expense apparently - for his publishers Chapman and Hall to reset the type for his first four novels, and to print 12 copies of the books on large paper.' This is the trade issue of same but it is unusual to find the complete set thus. Images available on request.
