Description

Hardcover. Bound in purple cloth with unusual silver band across the middle where the title is printed on the spine and a decorative illustration on front and back covers. There is some minor rubbing on the silver spine on the spine. Cloth on the spine is faded a tone darker than the boards. Otherwise, binding is nice and clean. I have added a facsimile DJ to this book, both for protection and to complete the feel of this scarce first edition. Title page dated 1938. Copyright page dated 1938 and stated First Edition. 457 pages. Early ownership name on front free endpaper, in pencil. Small booksellers tag on free endpaper as well, from Lauriat's Books in Boston. On the back side of the free endpaper there is a neat sketch of some trees beside a river (or road), done in pencil. Foreedges are toned from age, as are the gutters at the endpapers where the glue has darkened with age. Rebecca has been continuously in print since this first edition was published in 1938. About Rebecca

Last night I dreamt I went to Manderley again. The novel 'Rebecca', by Daphne du Maurier, begins with this evocative sentence, setting the tone for a story of romance, jealousy, and intrigue. The unnamed protagonist, a young and naive woman, marries the charismatic Maxim de Winter after a whirlwind romance in Monte Carlo. Upon moving to his ancestral estate, Manderley, she confronts the pervasive influence of his late wife, Rebecca, whose legacy lives on long after her death.
