First British edition, cloth issue, an attractive copy of Stevenson's gothic-horror classic.
Stevenson "achieved world-wide success with his 'shilling shocker' Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, a moral allegory about the divided self and the problem of evil, the main incidents of which came to him in a dream" (ODNB). The work first appeared in the US four days prior to its publication in Britain; the cloth issue was preceded by a wrappers issue, published about a week in advance.
Octavo. Original pink cloth, front cover lettered in black, grey and white patterned endpapers.
Bookseller's cataloguing description tipped in on front free endpaper verso. Spine slightly faded, cloth lightly rubbed but bright, extremities bumped, trace of bookplate removal to rear pastedown, outer leaves lightly foxed, contents clean. A very good copy.
