Description

Rare second impression of the first edition in original binding of Conrad's most famous novel, sometimes described as the first major contribution to Modernism. The total printing of the first edition, including the Colonial Issue, was just 2,893 copies [Ehrsam #2188]. This is a copy of the seldom-encountered Second Impression, issued like the first in 1900 and identical to the first in all points except for the Second Impression slug on the title page. The number of copies is not known, but the printing was in all likelihood much smaller that that of the first. My own estimate would be 1,000-1,500 copies. The book did not sell well as a third impression wasn't called for until 1904 and it was then out of print until the Shilling edition of 1914. Publisher's green cloth with spine and cover lettering and decoration in black and gilt. 451pp. Meticulous professional repair to minor fraying at head and tail of spine using matching cloth. Light foxing passim as usual with this title. Inner hinges strained but holding. Overall a good or better copy of a classic work that is now increasingly hard to find in its original binding, and a much cheaper (though virtually identical) alternative to the first impression.
