Hardcover. Black cloth with red lettering and decoration, and a bit of gold on the spine. Binding good and tight, but corners bumped. This copy has been rebacked, with 95% of original spine laid down, and a glimpse of black bookcloth peeking out at crown and foot of spine. New headband and tight new backing. Remains of a vertical crack in the spine, though both sides carefully restored. (ask for photos). Front endpaper has two splotches where something was attached and then removed. Title page dated only 1878. Some paper repair to rear free endpapers. All else good. Page 174 has Emily Dickinson's 'Success', which is the only poem published in a book during her lifetime (she was already in her late 40's with more than a thousand poems neatly stored in her house, known only to her and her circle).
