Description

Red cloth with gilt lettering on spine & gilt vignette on front board; map + woodcut illustrations (all present). An interesting association copy, being inscribed by Stanley on frontis verso to Mounteney Jephson who features regularly in the book as an expedition member. Stanley writes: "To my dear Mounteney Jephson the last survivor of the gallant band of officers who made the expedition a success" Signed Henry H Stanley. A postscript dated June 22nd 1897 Jubilee Day reads 'This volume is one of the first five issued of this edition'. Bookplate on front pastedown, with associated browning on front free end paper; damage to back hinge; tissue guard to frontis lightly foxed. Bottom corner of front board a little bruised. Red cloth slightly discoloured on spine, with pale marks on boards (1 on front board, several on back board). Folding map at rear undamaged. Used - Good. SIGNED association copy Good hardback in red cloth.
