(London: Gerald Howe 1934). First UK Edition. 218 pages. Superbly rebound by the world-renowned Bayntun-Riviere of Bath in full green morocco with all edges gilt, 5 raised bands to the spine with title blocked in gold in panel 2 and author's name blocked in gold in panel 3; decorative chiyogami end-papers; and single-line gilt border to both the front and back boards; gilt block to front board that recreates the motif from the original cloth boards. The original boards and end-papers are bound-in at the back of the book. A beautiful fine copy. What differentiates this copy from the norm - apart from the beautiful binding - is how clean the interior pages are. An OUTSTANDING EXAMPLE. No inscriptions. Becoming very scarce indeed. It would grace any collection of modern first editions. Mary Poppins first appeared in a short story in 1926 entitled: "Mary Poppins and the Match Man" which introduced Poppins and Bert, the street artist. This novel was Travers' first literary success. Charmingly illustrated throughout by Mary Shepard who is best known for her illustrations for the Mary Poppins stories. The novel was adapted into a famous musical film of the same name in 1984 directed by Robert Stevenson for Walt Disney starring Julie Andrews, Dick van Dyke, David Tomlinson and Glynis Johns. It was a huge success receiving 13 Academy Award nominations and won five (including Best Actress for Julie Andrews). Photographs/scans available upon request.
