The series became widely read in Europe, being known simply as The Waverley Novels, due to Scott not taking public authorship until 1827. The novels are set over a period of a eight hundred years, from 1097 with 'Count Robert of Paris' to the 19th century with 'St. Ronan's Well'. Scott took inspiration from his homeland of Scotland, setting fifteen out of the twenty-five novels there.
