In La Hojarasca, García Márquez introduces many plot points and characters that make appearances in his later work, including the fictional town of Macondo, the setting for this novella's plot. The story is told through a disjointed series of events, which center around the death of a widely-hated doctor in the town of Macondo and one family's promise to bury him despite protests from the other townspeople.
