Contemporary marbled calf, rebacked, with gilt tooling in compartments, contrasting spine labels, corners restored. Intermittent light foxing throughout, 1cm tideline along fore-edge of textblock of Vol. I (not penetrating to margin), small marginal stains on final leaves of Vol. I, not affecting text. With Paul Lockwood's [Abelard Books] c.1980 catalogue description laid in: "Despite minor faults, overall an exceptionally clean and elegantly bound copy of the greatest of all biographies in the English language.".
