The third issue of Steinbeck's second book. Either sheets or plates were purchased by Ballou from Brewer, Warren, and Putnam, the original publisher. Some were bound and issued in a Ballou binding with the Brewer title page (second issue). Others had a tipped-in Ballou title page (third issue) and that describes this book. Green cloth stamped in gilt. This copy has sunning at the head and heel of spine and a slight spine lean. The front hinge shows a little looseness but still holding together well-definitely too tight to reglue. Tiny bit of fraying at the bottom front corner. Black topstain and most of the green cloth still bright, gilt lelttering all readable- see photos. In great shape for its age. The original dust jacket is long gone but a facsimile of the first issue dust jacket is included. Per Goldstone and Payne, the third issue dust jacket was similar or identical to the first issue.
