Description

Highly finished pencil, ink and wash storyboard sketch for MGM's animated adaptation, signed beneath by Maurice Noble, who was in charge of production design and animator June Foray, who also voiced Cindy Lou Who. Based on Seuss's 1957 book and directed and co-produced by the great Chuck Jones, How the Grinch Stole Christmas was first released as a television special in December 1966, becoming a permanent fixture in US festive programming. The drawing shows the moment when Cindy Lou Who, here far more Seussian than in the glossy final product, first discovers the Grinch's thievery and asks "Why are you taking our Christmas tree... Why?", the shadows cast by the tree's branches seeming to reach out to menace the diminutive Whovillian. Original pencil drawing with ink and watercolour on MGM/Visual Arts storyboard panel paper. Image size: 11 x 15 cm. Sheet size: 14.5 x 16.3 cm. Excellent condition. Presented float mounted in an oak frame with acrylic glazing.

About How the Grinch Stole Christmas

'How the Grinch Stole Christmas!' is a children's story by Theodor 'Dr. Seuss' Geisel written in rhymed verse with illustrations by the author. It follows the Grinch, a grumpy, solitary creature who attempts to put an end to Christmas by stealing Christmas-themed items from the homes of the nearby town Whoville on Christmas Eve. Miraculously, the Grinch realizes that Christmas may not all be about money and presents.
