First edition in English, signed limited issue, number 340 of 525 copies signed by the author. This copy has the matching jacket, numbered in manuscript at the foot of the spine.
Although the work was originally written in Saint-Exupéry's native French, both English and French versions were both published in New York in April 1943, perhaps simultaneously. This copy has the attractive bookplate of Douglas [sic] Cooper on the front pastedown, possibly the American executive by the same name who traveled with his family on the Queen Mary from Southampton to New York on 8 August 1950, "in transit from France".
Quarto. Original light brown cloth, spine and front cover lettered in dark red, vignette illustration to the front cover in dark red. With dust jacket. Illustrated in color throughout by the author.
Foot of the spine bumped, trivial rubbing at spine ends and corners; jacket price-clipped, toning to the spine extending to the rear panel, minor abrasions, a few nicks, and short closed tears, two longer at the foot of the front panel: a near-fine copy in very good jacket. Grolier Children's 100, 88.
