Third edition, first printing, of the first translation into Chinese of "the most influential of American works on economics" (Grolier). Georgism shaped the political and economic philosophy of Sun Yat-Sen, in particular Sun's proposals for the equalization of land and the regulation of capital. All editions are now scarce with print-runs seemingly small: WorldCat records only three copies combined of the first two editions (1899 and 1903), all located in the US. Sun first read Progress and Poverty in English around 1897 and had frequent contact with British and Japanese intellectuals versed in George's ideas. Grolier American 100, 81. Octavo. Original red card wrappers, front cover lettered in black. Chinese and English title pages, text in Chinese. Small contemporary ink notation at head of front wrapper. Wrappers well preserved, front cover and head of spine expertly repaired, split at foot of rear joint, contents clean. A very good copy.
