London: G. Routledge & Co., 1856. [Classic French Literature] SECOND ROBSON EDITION, the sixteenth-thousand. Octavo (17 x 11cm), pp.viii; 423 [1]. Contemporary black half morocco, with gilt titles to spine and marbled paper over boards. Recently re-backed, with the original spine laid over the top. Gently toned throughout, with a few slightly proud gatherings. Some thumbing of edges to preliminaries. Heavy wear to binding, now restored to a solid, robust condition. Very good. The classic misogynist adventure novel, set in 17th century France, following the young firebrand D'Artagnan as he leaves home to seek his fortune in the personal retinue of Louis XIII, joins forces with fellow musketeers Athos, Porthos and Aramis, and engages in a series of street brawls, before murdering the court spy 'Milady'. First published in French in 1844, several English translations appeared soon after, and Robson's followed in 1853.
