First Edition, Second Printing, January 1935. An impressively well-preserved copy in pale blue cloth covered boards, dark blue cloth spine label, top edge stained dark grey, fore- and bottom edges untrimmed, in a gorgeous Fine dustwrapper, designed by Stuyvesant van Veen, which, aside from a couple of invisible scratches, and mild toning of the spine panel, is virtually as new, and extremely rare thus. 599pp. Roth's early first novel is a tour-de-force of Modernist prose, set in the teeming New York tenements--a fitting counterpart to Stieglitz's The Steerage. A book which was nearly forgotten for a generation, before being rediscovered and honored for the work of genius it is.
