A very scarce, first photoplay edition of Gaston Leroux's famous novel, 'Phantom of the Opera' Translated into English by Alexander Teixeira de Mattos. Illustrated, with a frontispiece and seven plates. The plates have been taken from the classic 1925 silent horror film starring Lon Chaney. There was an American edition issued later the same year with only four plates.'The Phantom of the Opera' was first published as a serial in Le Gaulois from September 1909 to January 1910. It was partly inspired by historical events during the 19th century at the Paris Opera.  The most notable adaptations are the 1925 film which forms the illustrations to this volume, and Andrew Lloyd Webber's 1986 musical. A fantastic copy of this very scarce and iconic work. It tells the story of a mysterious masked man living in the catacombs of the Paris Opera House and his obsessive love for the beautiful Christine Daaé.
