Description

First edition, first printing of the English philosopher and political economist's first book in which he formulates the five principles of inductive reasoning (known as Mill's Methods) which determine whether causes and effects are connected. Two volumes. Publisher's original cloth backed paper covered boards, white paper title labels printed in black to the spine. A very good unsophisticated set, the bindings square and firm with bumping and minor fraying to the spine tips, wear to the corners and fading to the blue cloth spines. The contents, with spotting primarily to the endpapers and prelims are otherwise clean throughout. 750 copies of the first edition were printed. The book "ran through many editions, established [Mill's] philosophical reputation, and greatly influenced Venn, John Neville Keynes, Frege and Bertrand Russell" (Magnusson, 1013). Further details and images for any of the items listed are available on request. Lucius Books welcomes direct contact with our customers.
