London: Secker and Warburg, 1945. A first edition, first printing of 'Animal Farm' by George Orwell, published by Secker and Warburg in 1945. A very good book (or better) with one neat name to the front endpaper. A little light staining to the edges of the boards - contents are clean. Slight cracking at hinges as is common with some fading and browning to the board edges. In a very good (or better) unclipped dust wrapper which has benefitted by some restorative repair to the spine, edges and corners. The 'Searchlight Books' advertisement printed in red to the verso. Vibrant titles to the spine and now presenting as a near fine dust wrapper. Now housed in a custom-made solander box. The release of 'Animal Farm' came shortly after the end of World War II and amid growing awareness of the atrocities committed by totalitarian regimes. Animal Farm is an allegorical novella by George Orwell, first published in England on 17 August 1945. The book tells the story of a group of farm animals who revolt against their human farmer, hoping to create a society where animals can be equal, free, and just. However, the revolution is hijacked by the pigs, who become just as oppressive as the humans. Animal Farm is an allegory for the Russian Revolution and the subsequent Soviet Union.
