London: Longmans, Green, and Co., 1886. [Classic Strange Tale] FIRST UK EDITION, first impression. Octavo (18 x 12cm), pp.[8] 141 [3]. With one leaf advertising the second edition of 'A Child's Garden of Verses' at rear. Contemporary ref half straight-grained morocco, with gilt titles and ruling to spine, and marbled paper over boards. All edges speckled red. A large black ink ownership to fly-leaf. A few minor marks to first couple of leaves, otherwise internally clean. Moderate general wear to binding, with some repairs to spine. Very good. The classic mystery crime novel / horror story inspired by the case of the Edinburgh body snatchers Burke and Hare. One of Stevenson's most successful works. Involving a split personality it demonstrates how a seemingly good person can become evil in certain situations, each character being quite separate from the other.
