Octavo, [iv], 431, [1] pages, [7] ads. In Fair condition. Bound in publisher's blind-stamped red cloth with gilt titling and ornamentation to spine. Boards have half of spine missing from tail edge, tearing to front joint from tail edge, tearing to bottom corner and fore edge of both covers, cloth repair on fore edge and bottom corner of front cover, sunning to spine, and moderate edge wear and shelf wear. Text block has bookplate on front pastedown, library bookplate on front endpaper, front endpaper detached, light foxing to many pages, and damp staining to most pages. The signature mark 14 is not present. Ex-Library. [Shelved in Room G]. Melville's first collection of short stories and the only one published in his lifetime. "Bartleby, the Scrivener," "Benito Cereno," and "The Encantadas" are regarded as Melville's most significant achievements in the genre of short fiction.
