Bindings are signed on the front endpaper "Bickers & Son London." Volume 1 has xlvi + 478 pages. Front cover detached but present. Folding map facing page 1. The 'directions to the binder' page calls for a map of the Western Empire, but that map is not present. Bookplate of Albert F. Madlener on the inside front cover. Volume 2 has 502 pages. Volume 3 has 404 pages. Volume 4 has 422 pages. Volume 5 has 412 pages with a folding map at the rear. Volume 6 has 397 pages with a folding map at the rear. Volume 7 has 426 pages with a folding map at the rear. Volume 8 has 376 pages with a folding map at the rear. Volume 9 has 495 pages with a folding map at the front. Volume 10 has 371 pages with a folding map at the front. Front cover detached but present. Volume 11 has 447 pages with a folding map at the front. Front cover loose. Volume 12 has 527 pages with a folding map at the front. All the maps have some detail or outlines in color. Gibbon's Decline and Fall was first published from 1776-1789 and has been in print continually since then. This set is in quite good condition, with 2 detached boards and one loose one. Bindings tight. Text clean. Attractive on the shelf, but with minor chips. Please email to request a photo. The bookplates, present on the inside front cover of each volume, have the name Albert F. Madlener. Madlener was a brewer in Chicago. His house is on the National Register of Historic Places. It is considered a key Prairie School building; it was designed by Richard Schmidt and Hugh Garden. The house was built in 1902.
