Description

"A Light in the Attic" by Shel Silverstein. New York: Harper & Row, Publishers, 1981. First edition, with inscription and drawing by author. Inscribed by Silverstein, "A Flower for Dawson With Love / Shel Silverstein," along with an original hand-drawn illustration by Silverstein on front pastedown of a hand holding a flower. Octavo (9 x 7 inches; 229 x 178 mm). 167, [168-175] pages. Numerous illustrations of Silverstein's drawings. Early printing with unclipped dust jacket showing "0981" on lower front flap, and without first edition stated on copyright page. Dust jacket has some moisture exposure along top edge, with a few small tears, light foxing to pastedown, a sticker affixed to page 6. Otherwise good condition. A collection of poems and drawings by the American poet, writer, and children's author Shel Silverstein. When the book first appeared, there were attempts to ban the work from some public libraries because some parents believed the book encouraged messiness and disobedience in children, or because some of the poems mentioned supernatural themes. Rare seen in true first edition with original drawing.
