First edition, First Printing: A spectacular copy with a large full page original highly detailed drawing by Ludwig Bemelmans of Madeline, Miss Clavel, the girls all dressed in their hats and school uniforms, and most unique is Ludwig Bemelmans drew himself to the front of the art, dressed in a santa suit and carrying a briefcase labeled with his initials (L.B), and ?Propositions? Signed and inscribed by Bemelmans ?To Uncle Henry, Here we go again, Ludwig? In the background Bemelmans drew a plane labeled ?S.S Payola?, the boarding ramp consisting of stairs and a stewardess. An immensely elaborate presentation drawing to Henry Sell, the Editor of Town & Country Magazine in the 1950s. The book includes a handwritten 3 page letter from Harry Sell, to Virginia describing how he arranged for Ludwig Bemelmans to draw the dedication for this book. The letter is dated 12.20.59, and the piece was given by Sell as a Christmas gift to his friend. The letter also specifically describes the context of Bemelmans? drawing. The letter, penned by Henry Sell on Town & Country letterhead, and dated ?12-20-59? is transcribed in full below and aside from its stunning provenance, also offer immense context to the drawing: ?Dear Virginia- Quite a spell back you asked me for a Bemelmans original. There was a time when that was an easy assignment but since the Hammer Galleries took over, ?an original? of that little man comes high (I just hope no one ever tells Bemmie or Hammer Boys about Mr. T?s wall: WOW) Enny how. He came in the other day and wanted me to wangle a trip to Paris for him, from some air line. I did. So he sat down and drew the dedication in this new book ? L.B. Propositions for the S.S. Payola flight. And because you really are such a wonderful good sport and fella, I in turn give the book and this amusing dedication to you. Ok? Merry Christmas Henry Sell (Please do not tell a soul) Thank you??
