The recipient is Marion 'Oatsie' Leiter, a close friend of the author whose name Fleming had appropriated for James Bond's trusted ally Felix Leiter of the CIA and Pinkerton's Detective Agency. Marion Leiter had recommended the James Bond novels to her friend Senator John F. Kennedy while recovering from an operation, and she subsequently hosted a dinner so both men could meet.
