First American Edition. Fine in a very good dust jacket. Inscribed by the author, 'To Hilda Vaughan, the gentlewoman, with best wishes from C.S. Forester - 1943.' The recipient, a well-regarded novelist herself, was the wife of novelist Charles Morgan, becoming a friend of Forester when moving to California from wartime England. The jacket illustration is by Tom Lea, best known for his writing and artwork set in the American West. All books described as first editions are first printings unless otherwise noted.
