The book includes several full page and half page text illustrations by the Polish graphic designer, Jan Mlodozenie (1929-2000), one of the most prominent members of the Polish School of Posters whose works are held in the collection of such museums as the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

Tortilla Flat is an early John Steinbeck novel set in Monterey, California. The novel was the first of Steinbeck's 'California novels.' Tortilla Flat was made into a film in 1942.
