First edition. A fine association copy originally belonging to Sir Bruce Richmond with his ink ownership signature and almost certainly given to him by Woolf. The author first met Richmond when she embarked on her serious career as a professional writer when he was the editor of the Times Literary Supplement. Woolf received encouragement from Richmond who remained a friend throughout her life. She wrote of her friend: "I learnt a lot of my craft writing for him: how to compress; how to enliven; and also was made to read with a pen and notebook seriously." 8vo., original yellow cloth with paper label on spine. Cloth slightly stained, darkened on spine, label a little rubbed and browned, a little browning to first and last few leaves, otherwise a very good copy. Woolf's third novel, which describes Jacob Flanders' life story from childhood through his adulthood until his death in World War I. Only one of 1500 copies printed.
