Bound in publisher's green cloth with gilt illustration and black embossed borders on the front board and decorative gilt lettering on the spine; this original hardcover binding is solid and square with two minor surface rubs to the cloth along the edges. The interior is clean except for neat previous owner's name on half-title and decorative bookplate on front pastedown. The text is clean and unmarked. NOT ex-library. Complete with 51 woodcut engravings (including 8 striking full-page plates) and 10 maps (including 2 folding & colored); the folding Route Map at the beginning of the Preface has been torn along the edge at the binding (the tear does not effect the map area) and is now just laid in. Overall, a clean, solid copy in original binding of this important and popular work of scientific exploration by the co-discoverer of the theory of evolution via natural selection; the book is dedicated to Charles Darwin.
