4to, [liv] - includes Life of John Evelyn, and Subscriber's List, 649, [x] - Index. Engraved frontispiece portrait by Francesco Bartolozzi, plus 41 plates mostly by John Miller (1715 - c.1792) all with tissue guards, of those there are 38 contemporary hand-coloured plates, one being a folding colour plate by Wm. Burgh, and one large folding letterpress table. Contemporary full calf bordered with a gilt Greek key design, stone patterned marbled endpapers. Engraved armorial bookplate of Sir Henry Goodricke, Bart. to front pastedown, stamp-sized printed plate "H.W. to F.F.G. 1840" in upper outer corner of pastedown, very occasional light offsetting to text (due to ink used in the printing), one contemporary ink note in bottom margin of p. 499, else interior quite clean and bright. Covers scuffed, skillfully rebacked some time ago, gilt-stamped title direct to flat-back spine, corners consolidated, matching marbled paper used on hinges. Overall, a very good, clean copy, scarce with the contemporary hand-coloured plates. First published in 1664, this is the first Hunter edited edition.
