Boston: Ticknor and Fields, 1854. First Edition. First edition, first printing. 357 [1, blank] pp. with title page vignette of Thoreau's hut at Walden and map facing p. 307 with S.W. Chandler imprint. Bound without ads (no priority), in publisher's ribbed brown cloth decorated in blind with titles in gilt on spine, pale yellow endpapers. Fine with remarkably crisp blindstamping to front and rear boards, very slight typical rubbing, worn foot; contents generally bright with hardly any foxing. Housed in a crimson custom slipcase. A truly lovely, unsophisticated copy in the original cloth. The chief work of one of the major figures in American literature and a landmark study of nature.
