Earth Abides imagines civilization's collapse due to a deadly pandemic and tells the story of a new, primitive society rising from the ruins. George Rippey Stewart, a longtime English Professor at UC Berkeley, published 28 books of fiction and nonfiction between 1930 and his death in 1980. He was known for his multi-disciplinary approach, combining insights from geography, history, anthropology, and ecology with masterful storytelling. Despite penning multiple best-sellers, Stewart has remained relatively obscure, though his influence is still felt across various genres.
