A classic of international literature, Der Steppenwolf was castigated by the Nazis as corrupting, but it later became totemic to the international freethinking generation that came of age in the 1960s. The first printing is distinguished by "1 bis 15 auflage" on the copyright page and on the front panel of the jacket, as well as the separately paginated "Tractat von Steppenwolf" bound between pages 64 and 65.
