First edition, first printing. A classic of international literature, Der Steppenwolf was castigated by the Nazis as corrupting, but it later became totemic to the international freethinking generation that came of age in the 1960s.
The first printing is distinguished by "1 bis 15 auflage" on the copyright page and on the front panel of the jacket, as well as the separately paginated "Tractat von Steppenwolf" bound between pages 64 and 65.
Octavo. Original blue cloth, spine lettered in gilt on black ground, rules and decoration to spine and covers in gilt, top edge pink. With dust jacket.
Small bookseller's ticket on rear jacket flap verso. Mottling to cloth, a few spots of foxing on outer leaves, else clean; toning and light splash marks to spine panel, a few small marks, edges nicked, without price as issued: a very good copy in like jacket.
