Translated by Alexander Teixeira de Mattos. First published in book form in French in 1910, this First UK Edition was issued the following year. The author had an abiding passion for the theatre, and after years of struggle, writing newspaper reviews and a number of successful plays, he made his mark with a novel about an extraordinary episode in the history of France's greatest opera house. Successfully adapted into various stage and film adaptations, most notable of which are the 1925 film depiction featuring Lon Chaney and Andrew Lloyd Webber's 1986 musical.
