Limited edition of seven hundred and fifty copies, of which this is number two hundred and twenty two. Numbered and signed by the author to the limitation page. The first edition, printed on handmade paper. Bound in the publisher's cloth and presented in the very scarce plain dustwrapper. With charming vignette illustrations by James Broom-Lynne. Vita Sackville-West was an English poet, novelist and horticulturalist, as well as a prolific letter writer and diarist. She is also known as being the androgynous protagonist of Orlando: A Biography, written by her friend and lover Virginia Woolf. 'The Garden' is an epic poetical work of a deeply symbolic and personal nature, which uses the metaphor of the seasons in the garden, to represent the seasons of life, all framed within the backdrop of war. Upon publication, the work was met with much critical acclaim and was awarded the Heinemann Award for literature.Bookplate of 'L' to the front paste down. Bound in the publisher's cloth, with the original, unclipped, plain dust wrapper. Externally, excellent, with light shelf wear, a little fading to the tail of the spine, and light marks to the rear board. Bookplate to the front paste down and ink notation to the front endpaper. Dust wrapper is smart with a closed tear to the head of the front joint, light sunning to the spine, and the odd spot or mark. Internally, firmly bound. Pages bright and clean, with some pages remaining unopened. Near Fine.
