A tale of powerless women in a patriarchal society. The novel won the Governor General's Award in 1985 and the first Arthur C. Clarke Award in 1987. It was also nominated for the 1986 Nebula and Booker Prize and the 1987 Prometheus Award. This copy with an early trial jacket (a modernist woman in red clutching a handbag), which was changed entirely for the eventual publication, reportedly due to objections from the author (David Rees 6/97 - Quill and Brush Author Guides). About a VG+ proof in red wrappers with the trial jacket about VG showing lots of edgewear and minor chipping, now with brodart for protection.

The Handmaid's Tale is a dystopian novel by Canadian author Margaret Atwood, first published in 1985. It is set in a near-future New England, in a totalitarian state resembling a theonomy that has overthrown the United States government. The novel focuses on the journey of the handmaid Offred, her life in this regime, and her role in society to produce children against her will.
