Description

First edition, first impression, one of 25 copies. This pamphlet comprises one of Clement Shorter's privately printed booklets collecting three contributions by Conrad to the Daily Chronicle and issued by Shorter "for private distribution among my friends". "The pamphlets printed by Shorter had immediately become collectors' items and... were bringing good prices" (Cagle) Shorter (1857-1926), the journalist and critic, was editor of the lllustrated London News and then of Sphere, a literary journal he founded in 1900. A year later he founded Tatler magazine. He issued six privately printed pamphlets collecting work by Conrad between 1917 and 1919. Cagle notes that "because some of the copies are numbered and signed by Shorter and others are not, some collectors have questioned whether or not the limitation was strictly adhered to". However, Cagle concludes that "there is no evidence... that Shorter extended his editions... [and] there is no indication of fraudulent over-printing. No two copies of the same pamphlet have turned up with the same number and in no case is any of the pamphlets around in a large enough number of copies to suggest printing of more copies than the limitation statement claims". Cagle notes that "to what extent Conrad was involved in this venture is not known though evidently it had his blessing". Conrad's article, originally published in three parts, on 22, 23, and 24 August 1918, is reprinted without change from the Daily Chronicle. It First edition, first impression, one of 25 copies.
