First American Edition; A Near Fine book in a Very Good dust jacket. SIGNED by the author on a card affixed to the front free paper. An outstanding copy of this first edition printed in English; originally published in French, the play debuted on stage in Paris in 1953; translated by the author into English and published by the Grove Press in 1954. Subtitled "A tragicomedy in two acts", this play has been voted "the most significant English language play of the 20th Century". Signed copies of this book are very rare, the first US even more so; as of this writing, this is the only US edition that includes the author's signature currently on the market.
